Boyo a bad word?

Okay, so this was something I didn't expect to find. And it's fairly current too. According to this article from Wales, boyo is a racist term.

I know it's a word that's been around awhile and I'm guessing it followed the Irish, British, Welsh and Scotch immigrants over the Atlantic. But racist? Who'da thunk it?

I've never heard the term. Is this how you say it,

boe-yoe?

What's it "mean" ??

close! It's pronounced boy-oh.

From what I ever understood, it was just a word referenced to a guy. Kind of like "pull yer head outuv yer arse, boyo!"

It's used a lot in punk and I've seen it in slang used in older movies with Irish immigrants (one that comes to mind is Gangs of New York).

I guess I assumed it was just like "dude" or something. =/

It's a generic term for a welsh man, but usually used in a derogoratory way, such as "pull yer head outta yer arse boyo" :-)

There are always these PC stories lurking around waiting for slow news days. A few years ago we were told that "taking the mick" was racist to the Irish, but no-one took any notice of that either.

ahhhh, I didn't realize boyo was specific to the welsh. Thanks, mrs. aginoth!
